11 Animated Films

Perhaps I've a blind spot in preferring 'live' people to artists' renderings. For me re 'toons' the story must be powerful. Rosen's Watership Down is the finest example of a 'toon' that works perhaps because its source is the multiple-layered novel by Richard Adams, & the voices/dialogues have a dramatic/emotional resonance that other animes lack. The others represent the best of various techniques or are the highest rated by cinema critics.

Bambi is prime Disney animation, avoids illustrating people & is not dilluted by silly songs. Mononoke is Miyazaki's epic, his most interesting & encompassing, while making full use of the visual spectrum offered thru anime. Also included at this time are his two more critically acclaimed My Neighbor Totoro & Spirited Away, as well as The Wind Rises.

Computer-animated: The satire of The Incredibles sustains thru multiple viewings. Wall-E's tiny robots are embeded with a surprising amount of humanity, in a minalmist sense & far more than many live action features today, but the finale seems a bit dopey. Pixar's Inside Out is or was my wife's favorite cartoon, but i'm excluding because i find its representation of emotions too arbitrary & simplistic. Zootopia/Zootropolis is the best & most entertaining since & maybe including The Incredibles.

Linklater's Waking Life stimulates intellectually & conceptually, & its animated style is the ultimate in freely flowing visual art, frame by frame, exceeding the form & content of its live-action base.

105 Documentaries

This entire category requires special attention. Few non-musical docs are rewarding beyond their initial viewing. The most re-watchable are those like Man with a Movie Camera & the Reggio & Fricke contructions. The term 'documentary' requires definition. A non-fiction film? Yet a director's intention will bend the factual material. Some doc makers, like Herzog & Morris & back to Flaherty, restage scenes. Kiarostami's Close Up is probably the best example. Perhaps a good definition is that a documentary has a non-dramatically contrived script with no fictional characters, using authentic settings. You can have a concept & intention, but then you shoot footage of what you find using the non-actor inhabitants of the location. The amount of direction given to the subjects will vary from nothing to considerable. ('Anyone out there have a better thought?---i'm clean out of them.'(

About My Particular Perhaps Peculiar Cinema Preferences

Writing about a visual/auditory art needs a special syntax, I think, & I don't have it yet, so please pardon me while i grope. This is a four year project.....everything will come in time. Here are a few reflections in rough form:

Since starting this project, I've expanded from only embracing movies that I like to see repeatedly to including ones that deserve at least a single view for sundry reasons.

At this time the list above contains around 1500 titles & includes nearly all the top 376 films that got 5 or more critics votes from 846 international movie critics in the 2012 Sight & Sound poll. Maybe half the rest got 4 or less votes, & the remainder are films that need to be considered in my opinion. Some got no votes. Altogether in 2012, 2045 films were named by critics & an additional several hundred by film directors. The reality is that 1/2 million movies or more have made since the advent of cinema, maybe multiple millions if one includes films of all lengths.

We don't know where the history of film will be 50 years from now. Most of us won't be here. I've been around long enough to have seen nearly all of the most widely known films ever made. My concept is that all films are art or attempts at thereof, except some are superior to others.

Compare movies with paintings or single works of art. The art field contains a plethora of recognised masterpieces which, via reproductions, are not beyond anyone's ability to glimpse in a reasonable amount of time. We may view a single art work in one second or linger for one million.

Not so with movies. They require an average of 2 hours to see, regardless of quality, or our ultimate interest. We can walk out, but at the loss of our admission price, so we usually stay until the end, & regardless, even leaving during the first minutes takes at least a half-hour of our time.

Some paintings or single art pieces stir our feelings so sharply that we're aware they're something special. Others don't. Our entire lives we're deluged by single art images, from commercial reproductions to our kid's classroom arts, & more ubiquitously & dullingly, we're assaulted by adverts to buy all sorts of things.

Similarly with the movies, with only their trailers giving us a very limited taste of what they may be. Trailers, however, are like tiny product samples or adverts - we don't really know the thing until we try it.

Thus, we need some sort of input about a movie before we commit ourselves. Word-of-mouth from people whose opinions we respect becomes necessary beyond the adverts. Besides friends' recommendations, we read critics whose opinions we respect. Simultaneously, we look at movies variously for art &/or temporary entertainment.

Some films provide a pleasant or informative viewing experience once only. The majority of documentaries, even award-winning ones fall into this category, unless you're a cinema student studying the craft.

Occasionally we see a film which seems OK but nothing special, and then see it again later by chance or hunch, & discover that its impact on our persona is far more than at first. Other times, we find & rediscover certain films, which we did appreciate years ago. Similarly, some films impress greatly on first view, then bore when seen again.

A enduring film is one which can & should be worth seeing repeatedly, so let's forget all the movies seen once for a moment's escape (or by mistake) & never seen again, certainly not like a daily newspaper read & tossed away, but more like a great book returned to again & again because it touches or moves or inspires in some special way, or maybe simply because it's so well done that its "how" outlives the "what". Few of today's movies meet this criteria. And with the plethora of inane, empty, subjectively personal or superficial new films, many older films rise in our esteem.

There's other subjective elements: many of us tend to treasure more those movies seen during our younger formative years. Or we develop an attachment to a film because our first view came at a time of pleasurable life experience. Also, our personal experience sometimes coincide with the content of a movie & we are drawn to certain movies that reflect experiences dear to us.

This selection of great films spans the critical specturm, from the rarely seen acclaimed selections of serious film critics to the popular audience pleasers often critically marginalised, but excluding certain award-winning successful movies which have no lasting content (IMHO) - the most significant omissions to be covered in essays stating why they may be worth seeing once for the sake of awareness & why 50 years from now they will probably be mere curiousities from today's rather crazy film era or popular taste. These are the titles missing from the current list, to be addressed especially. One example: Titanic.

An 'enduring' film - i think the term 'great' is overused - may not exhibit extraordinary craftsmanship but technical aspects need a certain level of proficiency to not be negatively distracting. Multiple layers of meaning is good reason to see a movie again - even though you know what's going to happen, or perhaps so much happens that it is impossible to grasp everything with a single view. Or perhaps, the film features a performance by an actor & character with whom you feel a personal affinity, or the story itself is something that has unique individual significance.

Right now our list covers over 100 years since film evolved from its early primitive form to become a developed medium around 1915, via both improved production mechanics & creative development of the artists. I don't know how many will finally be listed. The projected publication date of Like Tears in Rain is November, 2019.

There are already numerous excellent books with c.1000 film recommendations out there. How will Like Tears in Rain be different? I'm not yet sure.

In reasearching & preparing this selection, besides seeing all films 3 or more times, I'm surveying top films from the Sight & Sound BFI international polls of critics & directors throughout the world beginning with the first poll in 1952 to the most recent in 2012, the American Film & British Film Institute surveys, what's been noted at Cannes, Venice, the Oscars & other awards venues, as well as critics top lists year by year. In sum, Like Tears in Rain will be, God willing, encompassing, easy to read & nice to look at.

Altogether over 100 quality books on movies are being consulted with writings of these critics especially considered (in random order): Roger Ebert, Richard Schickel, Pauline Kael, Stanley Kaufmann, Andrew Sarris, Jonathan Rosenbaum, J Hoberman, David Denby, David Thomson, Anthony Lane, Arthur Knight, James Agee, John Simon, André Bazin, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese, Peter Bagdanovich & New York Times critics past & present. (Have i overlooked anyone significant? -- if so, let me know at sc@cinemacom.com --- thanks.) As indicated, the intention is that Like Tears in Rain be definitive, & of lasting value to both cinema lovers AND, maybe, more importantly, the professional film making community.
Big goals. Maybe dreams.

A number of films currently listed below are virtually unknown, or forgotten, or were dismissed critically at the time of their release & few bother to look at them today. Many films will be removed & many added in reaching a final selection. Right now, there are oversights & several films now await 3rd or 4th or 5th viewings.

What critic starting out today can possibly see as many films as I have since I began in 1949, or other critics or filmmakers who also grew up during my era, who are still working or producing, such as Scorsese or Rosenbaum or Thomson? So many of the finest, most incisive, have left us recently: Sarris, Ebert, Schickel, Kaufmann.

In commenting on his selections in the last S&S poll, Roger Ebert said that because one film offers a more positive view of life than another is not a defensible criteria. I disagree, & believe worthwhile art should uplift our human spirit or broaden our awareness or perception of life, not leave us depressed because of the assimilation of a disturbed artist's personality or ot reinforces his narrow or deadened view of the world. But, yes, there may be some films included with the caveat that are not something that may leave you feeling grand, but may be worth a look if their content appeals. An example is Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz, a 14 hour beautifully rendered drama of life on the lower fringe of German society in the early 1930s. Pretty sad, yet containing the sense of the despondent milieu that welcomed Hitler & made possible his rise to power.

A special interest: the restoration of Stanley Kramer's reputation. Today, Kramer is critically ignored because his best films each had a singular theme or message which could not be missed by anyone in the very large audiences he designed his films to attract. He did not make films for the intellectually astute who express their perceptions to a select audience of equally astute viewers, but for the widest possible audiences & in an entertainingly dramatic way & with sometimes wry humour, to truly influence a necessary change in general perception by leaving a lasting impression in the consciousness or subconscious of viewers.

Thus, I consider On the Beach may have helped save the world. It is unlikely that anyone involved in the precarious Cuban missle crisis in 1962 had not seen the movie.

In my opinion, among today's post-apocalypse wasteland cinema treats, On the Beach plays well as a parable of what might have happened then. It's semi-documentary air seems over-looked. The engrossing dramatic structure is played by an excellent cast of screen stars from that era. That the event did not happen may to whatever small degree be attributed to the wide influence & popularity of this film. Except for Titanic what other movie about disaster has been comparatively popular? Evidently, it was God's will that man survive, but it is man's job to do the best he can in the right direction. I believe On the Beach may be one of the most postively influential movies ever made, yet it seems weirdly popular for most all 'serious' critics to negate Kramer & the film today.

Judgment at Nuremberg has a fine cast giving engrossing performances, super cinematography & a script presenting the most encompassing story of WWII's aftermath, including the topical political, of any film i've seen. Maybe its scale is too great? It's a shame that this film, among the over 2000 cited by at least one critic in the last S&S poll, did not receive one vote.

I've seem Judgment at Nuremberg as many times as The Searchers, Vertigo & many Hitchcock, The Magnificent Ambersons, Ikiru, 8 1/2, Touch of Evil, It's a Wonderful Life, The Wild Bunch, Star Wars, Blade Runner over the years (somewhere b/w 15-30 times---i lose count), & still find it stimulating. Why are these films in the top 10, top 100 or 300, & Judgment at Nuremberg is not?

John Huston is another director whose works are today fairly denigrated, unreasonably I believe. Generally, i agree with the overall critical accessment of most directors' works, with the exception of a few newer or contemporary artists.

Like Tears in Rain will also have special sections devoted to Westerns, Film Noir & other genres. Documentaries or non-fiction films require a different approach. I'm still contemplating: Some can be viewed numerous times, others are worthwhile seeing once, but have little or nothing to offer in a 2nd viewing. Musical docs are some of the most enduring for their entertainment value.

I'm lucky. I've seen between 20 & 30,000 different films. I see anything worthwhile many times - multi-layered movies by intent or by chance inspire lingering fascination.

Super visuals, fine directing, strong, quirky, surreal or unusual stories & dialogue, actors with distinctive personalities (very few today), touching music - all combine to make a movie worth seeing more than twice.

Criticism is inordinately subjective - who doesn't know that? I've seen most great silent films at least a couple of times, but embraced only Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc until recently, perhaps partly because the D'Arcs & Cherpitels are related in French ancestry. Recently i've added other highly regarded classics to broaden my view & question previous likes & dislikes. I seek to see 'inside' the opinions of the major critics. If a personal favorite is at odds with 'conventional wisdom' i've got to have good reason to accept or discard the majority opinion.

Many silent films are beautifully done for their time, but techniques of image & sound were not reasonably perfected until the late 1930s. Also, most silents have overwrought or simplistic stories & the stylised acting is often quaint by today's standard. Few imaginative new scores have been to silents, which might add to their completion.

Most of my film prefs begin in the late 1930s. But restorations & Blu-ray have done a superb job in making silent films more enjoyable visually. Most all the films i list are in my personal collection. I'm replacing every possible DVD with Blu-ray editions as they become available. Blu-ray or 'BD' is extraordinarily addictive for its superior resolution, & have made innumerable silent films more enjoyable than they've been since the 1920s. American owners of old titles are slow to make classics available in the USA in BD, thus many BD transfers of USA classics come from overseas.

Westerns are 10% of my collection. Director faves include Hitchcock, Truffaut, Ford, A Mann, Bresson, Peckinpah, Kieslowski, Renoir, Ozu, Wilder, Huston, Sam Fuller & both Rays. Actors: Bogart, Clift, Mitchum, Stewart, Cooper, Lancaster, K Douglas, Peck, R Scott, Brando, Wayne. Today's 3 most interesting & prolific directors are Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog & Clint Eastwood. Most watchable living actors: Robert Downey Jr & Jennifer Lawrence.

I like movies of spiritual import, obvious: The Gospel According to St. Matthew (& Dreyer's, Bresson's & Besson's Joan) or subtle: Star Wars, Chariots of Fire, E.T., Blade Runner, The Tree of Life & other films of Malick, as well as Kieslowski.

Comedies & musicals: few engage me after 2 viewings. The 'how' of the comedy & jokes must outlast the 'what', & the songs have gotta be great.

Like Tears in Rain book will resemble this page in proportions of graphics & text, movie posters the principal visual, & layout more aesthetic in design.

I'm still searching for the right language syntax, & ask your forgiveness if i've said anything which has offended in any way, or for rambling. Thank you for reading.
